Rebecca Akerson is from my comic "The Beasts of Kay-7". I don't know who the red head is, but she looks tough. You can take a closer look at the original ink drawing at my Etsy shop.

Inking

I hesitate to show my inks next to Matt Sheean's original pencils, because I leave a lot out and change things around. He keeps it loose so I can do just that though, so I shouldn't feel bad. This is a page from our upcoming comic called Expansion. I have so much fun just inking. Doing pencil and layout work stresses me out.

I'm Still Doing Comics

I haven't posted much on the comics I'm making right now, but I'm really excited for them. This is an image from "King Saul" a stand alone full color comic that will be done in time for A.P.E.

Collaboration

Matt Sheean and I have been friends for six or so years now, and we've finally collaborated on a comics page. This is just an experiment to see how it would look if I inked Matt's pencils. We're planning to do a full stand alone story (like Utu) in time for A.P.E. It's going to be so much fun!

The Standard Alternate Cover

Another commission:
It's an alternate cover for a comic written by Jay Sherer and drawn by Nathan Scheck

ROM #1 / Utu Page 2

Here's another commission, this time for the cover of ROM Space Knight #1, originally drawn by Sal Buscema. This is the $50 level, by the way, but on July 9th it's going to be raised!

This is page two from my first comic, Utu. To see details of the page, and to see other original drawings for sale, go to my etsy page.

Zeppelin Stories / Alien Juicers

First, one of the commissions from the Malachi Ward Pledge Drive:

Second, I added another original drawing to the etsy page:

Lastly, the commission prices are pretty low right now, but they're going to go up to something a little more respectable in two weeks (That's Friday July 9th) so if you want the best deal, act now!

A Malachi Ward Pledge Drive

Funds at the Malachi Ward Complex are getting low, so I thought I might offer my services as an artist for hire. To make things easier I made three commission levels with some examples. So if you want a crazy drawing of something, I think I've got some pretty good deals.

The $100 Level
An 8.5x11 tight ink drawing on thick vellum paper. Like this, my version of the cover of Red Sonja #4:

The $75 Level
An 8.5x11 ink sketch on regular paper. Like this, a drawing of Nightcrawler:

The $20 Level
An 8.5x5.5 ink sketch on regular paper. Like this, a drawing of a scene from The Coen Brother's 2001 movie The Man Who Wasn't There:

I'm also putting up original drawings and pages at different prices over at my Etsy shop. Like this, the cover of Utu, my first comic, for only $100:

If you don't like using Etsy or Paypal, send me an email and we'll do something else. Also, if you want something more elaborate or different than the three levels I set up, send me an email. To do a commission just pick your level over on the sidebar! Thanks!

Smoke Signal #5

I've got a comic in the fifth issue of Smoke Signal! I'm surrounded by incredible and superior artists such as Gabrielle Bell, Vanessa Davis, Tom Gauld, Lisa Hanawalt, Leah Hayes, Sam Henderson, Michael Kupperman, Tim Lane and Ben Marra. If you live in New York you can pick a copy up for free from Desert Island. If you live anywhere else you just go here and pay a measly $3 shipping for 32 newspaper pages of greatness.

Silverlake Jubilee

The Silverlake Jubilee is happening this weekend (May 22) here in LA, and there are a few cool comics events scheduled. At 10:30 (that's in the a.m., folks) I'll be doing a comics "reading" at El Cid with Robert Goodin, Tom Neely, David King, Jesse Moynihan, and Ted Stearn. Throughout the day I'll have some comic books available for purchase in the Literary Village and I'll be doing a signing from 2-3. For a full schedule of the comics signings (which also include Joe Matt and Tim Hensley) click here.

Also, the panel above is from a new short comic called "Sweet Dreams" which I'll be reading at the El Cid along with another new one called "Samuel".

So stop by if you can!

Next Comic

Right now I'm working on my next comic, River Rock. It's going to be a lot longer than my previous comics - about 150 pages. I'll be doing shorter comics to bring to conventions while I work on this one, so I won't drop off the earth completely. Also, in July I'll be posting a 15 page preview of River Rock on my redesigned website! So stay tuned...

Early Stages

Right now I'm furiously trying to finish "The Beasts of Kay-7" in time for Stumptown. I have about ten (full color) pages to go. In the midst of that project, I'm also planning the next one, which will be much longer (probably released in four 30ish-page increments). Above is a rough layout of the first three pages and a sketch of the main character. While working on the story and characters, and pretty much any of the preliminary stuff, I listen to a lot of music. I've developed a playlist I use that sort of fits the mood of the comic. It's set in the Mesolithic (pre-farming) and the music seems to reflect that in a way. It's hours of mostly ambient stuff, but I thought I'd include a sampling of some representative songs below.

1. The Microphones - (Something) Cont.
From The Glow, Pt. 2, 2001

2. Andrew Bird - Carrion Suite
From Useless Creatures, 2009

3. Camille - Vous
From Le fil, 2005

4. Old Time Relijun - Indestructible Life!
From Catharsis in Crisis, 2007

5. Tim Buckley - Dream Letter
From Happy Sad, 1969

6. Low - Violent Past
From Drums and Guns, 2007
