Early Stages

Right now I'm furiously trying to finish "The Beasts of Kay-7" in time for Stumptown. I have about ten (full color) pages to go. In the midst of that project, I'm also planning the next one, which will be much longer (probably released in four 30ish-page increments). Above is a rough layout of the first three pages and a sketch of the main character. While working on the story and characters, and pretty much any of the preliminary stuff, I listen to a lot of music. I've developed a playlist I use that sort of fits the mood of the comic. It's set in the Mesolithic (pre-farming) and the music seems to reflect that in a way. It's hours of mostly ambient stuff, but I thought I'd include a sampling of some representative songs below.

1. The Microphones - (Something) Cont.
From The Glow, Pt. 2, 2001

2. Andrew Bird - Carrion Suite
From Useless Creatures, 2009

3. Camille - Vous
From Le fil, 2005

4. Old Time Relijun - Indestructible Life!
From Catharsis in Crisis, 2007

5. Tim Buckley - Dream Letter
From Happy Sad, 1969

6. Low - Violent Past
From Drums and Guns, 2007

The Scout

Some alternate images I did for The Scout awhile back. The only way you can read The Scout is to order the fantastic anthology Hive 3 right here! It's got loads of cool stuff in it.

New Project

Page six from the new project I'm working on. I'm trying out a more involved method of coloring. The comic is a science fiction/adventure story and I wanted the coloring to be more representative than what I usually do. I'm still not totally sure about it (although I feel pretty good). Thoughts?

News!

I've got two bits of cool information:
First, my band has a blog that has been around for a little while, but is now offering lots of really cool content with updates at least once a week. You can listen to the new e.p. for free whenever you go, there are objectively awesome mixes of music we like, and artwork by guest artists illustrating our lyrics. The first one is by the incredible Lindsay Eller.

Here is the one I did:
So go to the website now and follow or add to your RSS feed or whatever.

Secondly, I have a new, exclusive 16 page comic in the awesome anthology Hive 3, and it's available right now! Go buy it! It's published by Grimalkin Press and features stories by Matt Kindt (Super Spy, 2 Sisters), J.W. Cotter (Skyscrapers Of The Midwest), Hawk Krall, and many more!

140 pages of awesomeness for only $10?! Check it out!

Alternate Colors

I was cleaning up my hard drive and found a different version of the Devil Dinosaur cover I did for the Covered blog a few months back.
See the version I chose over this one, plus Kirby's original here.

APE Report

Ape was so much fun! I sold a decent amount of comics, and a lot of cool people came by the table, including some of my favorite cartoonists.
